About the Author
Kia Saeian, MD, MSc, EpiDr. Saeian is Professor of Medicine-Gastroenterology and the Associate Chief, Director of Clinical Affairs of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Division at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). Dr. Saeian is a transplant hepatologist but remains interested and involved in all aspects of hepatology and gastroenterology. Dr. Saeian received his medical degree from the University of California-San Diego School of Medicine, completed his Internal Medicine training, Chief Medical Residency and Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin and also received Hepatology and Liver Transplantation training at the University of Miami. He has been intimately involved in fellowship training since he joined the Faculty of MCW in 1999 and has had the opportunity to mentor trainees who have gone on to great success in his areas of research interest including minimal hepatic encephalopathy and outcomes research.


Reza Shaker, MDDr. Shaker is a Tenured Professor of Medicine, Radiology and Otolaryngology, Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Senior Associate Dean for Translational Research, Director of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) of Southeast Wisconsin (CTSI) and Director of the Digestive Disease Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). Dr. Shaker is the founder of the Dysphagia Research Society and joined the MCW faculty in 1988 since which time he has established a world-renowned research group internationally recognized for his work on the protective mechanisms of the upper airway during swallowing and gastroesophageal reflux. He developed the Shaker Exercise, an isotonic/isometric head lift exercise for treatment of swallowing difficulties, and the technique of unsedated transnasal upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Since 1989, he has been the recipient of numerous research awards from both the NIH and the Department of Veterans Affairs and has mentored numerous renowned trainees.

He was only 37 years old when a speeding bus on a busy Bangkok street killed him in 1984. This retrospective book spans his whole artistic career, from his earliest dance posters, to his ground breaking science fiction and horror comix, to his innovative and colorful tattoo art. Greg Irons was one of the elite among posters artists who worked for Bill Graham's Fillmore Ballroom in San Francisco during the Age of Aquarius, designing posters for Chuck Berry, Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother, and Paul Butterfield. You Call This Art?! reprints his finest psychedelic posters in full-color, as well as complete comic stories from Slow Death Funnies, Legion of Charlies, Deviant Slice, Yellow Dog, Thrilling Murder, and many other underground comic books. It also includes rarely seen album cover art for Jerry Garcia, Blue Cheer, Jefferson Starship and other counterculture musicians. Irons had a third career as an illustrator of children's coloring books, and pages from books including One Old Oxford Ox, Last of the Dinosaurs, Pirates, and Wyf of Bathe appear as well. Many examples of his tattoo art are also included.

Irons was in the second tier of underground-comics artists. He joined the San Francisco comics scene in 1969 and barely missed becoming a regular contributor to the legendary Zap Comix. His style coalesced a bit later, after he belatedly discovered the notorious EC horror comics of the 1950s, which inspired him to apply the genre's devices to the violence in American society in such comic books as Skull and Slow Death. His magnum opus, Legion of Charlies, equated Charles Manson and Lieutenant Calley and is among the 17 stories that appear whole in this retrospective. Irons also designed psychedelic concert posters for Bill Graham's Fillmore Ballroom rock shows, and after underground comics' midseventies decline, turned to children's-book illustration and tattoo art; all three forms are amply represented here. Many of his later comics have still--resonant environmental themes. The directions his career might have taken were cut short by a Bangkok bus in 1984. Irons was 37. The work and personal story of a genius who's life was cut short, yet he left a legacy of artwork beyond what many could have achieved in twice the amount of time. A facinating read and inspiring illustrations.

Hell Yes I Call This ART!!!

This is the book I've been waiting for, and now I can retire all my old Greg Irons undergrounds to bags and boxes and display this volume proudly on my shelf, and have it at easy access for constant consultation. About the only thing I don't like about this book is the weird day-glo cover design. For some reason it almost makes the book look like an advance copy, as it appears unfinished. Aside from that I couldn't love this book more. Mr. Rosencrantz is generous in his biographical details, family photos, snapshots and art from every phase of Mr. Irons' too short career. This book is well worth every penny it costs, and so few books are these days. If you have an interest in anything from old San Francisco Rock posters, to underground comix, to record album design to book illustration to tattoo art....This is the book for you!!! Can't recommend this book highly enough!!!!

Fantastic Overview, Gigantic Talent

Way back in the summer of 1974, in my: "Starvin' Artist Daze". I had been working on 30 pages of comix art for months. One August morning, I gathered up my guts and drove to Berkeley, and the comix stronghold known as the Print Mint. Shaking like a leaf, I walk into the Folger Ave. office. Inside is Bob DeRita, the owner, at his desk talking to a lanky young guy with long, long blonde hair and a scruffy beard. He's calling him Greg, I have walked in to the office right in the middle of an pay dispute. DeRita, is not in a good mood (To say the least!) and croaks: "Well, whatta you want?!!" Well, by now I'm about to lose my breakfast. After staring at my feet for the next few seconds, I silently shove my art at him. He looks it over (Quickly) and gives it back. "Two words, kid... Art School" was his reply. I'm lookin' at the door, when the other guy, Greg, say's: "Hey man, let me see your stuff!" At this point, I'm ready to crawl under a rock and die, but, I gave this friendly stranger my art. I was hoping this weird person was the owner of The Rip-Off Press. He looks it over for many long minutes (it seemed like hours) and gently hands my art back. Greg, tells me: "You are good man, But, you are readin' too much Crumb, and you are trying to draw Crumb", (He had me cold!)..."But, I see a little of my stuff in your work as well". "Your work?" I whispered. "Yeah", he continued, "Slow Death" & "Deviant Slice". Now, I knew who this guy was...Greg Irons was checking out my work.

Now, it's summer of 2007 and I'm readin' this great book: "You Call This Art?! This is a fitting tribute to an amazing artist. Lot's of his comix art is in here, many of The Filmore West posters as well & lot's of his tattoo Art. I had no idea that Greg had done illustrations for children's books, but, they are here as well. I possess many books about the Underground greats...Crumb, Shelton, S. Clay, etc. BUT, "You Call This Art", is one of the finest publications that I have seen in years, I learned a lot about the man, as well as the artist by reading this one.

Today, looking at Greg's work, three decade's on, it's even better than I remember it way back from the early 70's. There is a lot in that art, you will see the EC influence, that he grew up with. Greg, brought his love of great horror into the underground for all of us to enjoy. This book brings me right back to that time long ago. Times have changed, the Underground Comix business is kaput, and Greg is gone as well.

Oh, yeah...I attended some art classes, and my comics ARE in print in a small mountian newspaper in South Lake Tahoe, Ca. Greg, was a good guy and FANTASTIC ARTIST...This book tells his story with ton's of his wonderful art.

About the Author
Cynthia Delaney grew up in Winnemucca, Nevada, where she developed a great love of the outdoors. She took up photography at age twelve and worked exclusively on farm and cloud imagery for several years. Later she served on her high school yearbook committee and dabbled in fine art photography in college. At nineteen she went on a whirlwind trip to Europe with camera in hand. It changed her life. At twenty-one she moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, enticed by the blooming cholla and the anthropology department at the University of New Mexico. A year and a half later she moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, dropped the anthropology phase, and received a bachelor s degree in creative writing from the University of Alabama. She also completed an accelerated program in photography at New England School of Photography in Boston, Massachusetts. During the years of self-imposed exile she was never really able to shake the Winnemucca sand out of her shoes and she returned to Nevada in 1996. She currently lives in Elko, and although she periodically takes flight to the far corners of the earth, her life is firmly intertwined with the desert like the tenacious taproot of the sagebrush. Cynthia is a widely published photographer and writer. Besides her busy freelance career she holds a position at Great Basin College as adjunct photography instructor and is a correspondent for the Elko Daily Free Press. She recently completed a master s degree in documentary photography at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Although she has long been a photographer Cynthia pursued a short-lived career as an autopsy technician during her early college studies in forensic anthropology. About the Author
Harry Binswanger earned his Ph.D. in philosophy from Columbia University in 1973. He has taught philosophy at several universities, most recently at the University of Texas, Austin. An associate of Ayn Rand's in her final years, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Ayn Rand Institute since 1986. He is the author of The Biological Basis of Teleological Concepts and the editor of The Ayn Rand Lexicon and the expanded second edition of Ayn Rand’s Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology. “How We Know” by Harry Binswanger is a book on human epistemology from the perspective of the philosophy of Ayn Rand, known as Objectivism. Covering a wide scope of information on how the human mind works and how we use concepts to come to understand the world, Binswanger starts at the perceptually self evidence, through the axioms, through concept formation, through higher-level concepts, to propositions and generalizations, to logic, and to principles; including induction and deduction; with a special chapter on free will in man; and a philosophical overview of how various philosophical views regarding the human mind have effected the history of philosophical thought. One of the remarkable things about how the book is written is that it is fully objective. Objectivity consists of maintaining logic, context, and hierarchy. Logic is non-contradictory identification, context is insuring one keeps each bit of knowledge integrated with the rest of one's consciousness, and hierarchy means that some things have to be learned and understood before one can move on to issues related to but following from those previous thoughts. While the book is based on Objectivism and Ayn Rand's philosophy, one need not be familiar with Ayn Rand to be able to read it, since Binswanger gives many examples and demonstrations of the functioning of the human mind that even a beginner reader of philosophy can follow rather easily.

There is one drawback to the book, as far as I can tell; Binswanger does not discuss the role of good art in cognition. “How We Know” is a very comprehensive book on the topic, and it is very difficult to keep all of that information in mind. In the following review, I wrote a review of each chapter shortly after reading it, and I am finding it difficult to condense my review down to a page or two. So, what is needed to help keep a complicated topic in mind is a concretization of that topic, which is provided by good, objective art. One can say, in this context, that “How We Know” is like looking into the inner workings of the mind of an inductive Sherlock Holmes observing how his own mind works, and telling the rest of the world what he discovered.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to the reader who is interested in how we go about knowing the world.

Incredibly smart, precise and thought provoking

I was not familiarized with Dr. Binswanger's theory of epistemology. This book has answered my past doubts on the topics he touches and solved many more thoughts which came along. Many chapters capitalize Dr. Binswanger's genius (my own favorite is the one on Free Will), but the greatest achievement of this book is integration, i.e.: the ability to connect concepts, ideas and principles to each other making a whole inseparable system.
This is a book which any people interested in philosophy -be it a future intellectual, a college student seeking for answers or a philosopher with a PhD- should read.

About the Author
Karen Schrier is a doctoral student at Columbia University and an adjunct professor at Parsons The New School for Design. She also currently works full-time as an executive producer at Scholastic, where she spearheads digital initiatives for the Corporate and International divisions. Previously, she worked at Nickelodeon, BrainPOP and Barnes & Noble s SparkNotes. Karen was the Games Program co-chair of the ACM SIGGRAPH Conference in 2008 and 2009, and she currently serves on the advisory boards of the Computer Game Education Review (CGER) and the 2010 LEEF Conference. She has spoken on games and learning at numerous conferences, including GDC, SIGGRAPH, AERA, Games for Change, NECC, and SITE. She also helped develop numerous games and digital properties, such as Mission US: For Crown or Colony?; Scholastic s Harry Potter online, Summer Reading Challenge, and Scholastic.com; and Nickelodeon s ParentsConnect. Karen holds a master s degree from MIT and a bachelor s degree from Amherst College.

David Gibson is research assistant professor in the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, University of Vermont and Executive Director of The Global Challenge, a team and project-based learning and scholarship program for high school students funded by the National Science Foundation that engages small teams in studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics in order to solve global problems. His research and publications include work on complex systems analysis and modeling of education, web applications and the future of learning, and the use of technology to personalize education. His books include Games and Simulations in Online Learning, which outlines the potential for games and simulation-based learning, and Digital Simulations for Improving Education, which explores cognitive modeling, design and implementation. He is creator of simSchool, a classroom flight simulator for training teachers, currently funded by the US Department of Education FIPSE program. His business, CURVESHIFT, is an educational technology company that assists in the acquisition, implementation and continuing design of games and simulations, e-portfolio systems, data-driven decision making tools, and emerging technologies.

Vintage Robert Whitlow - a worthy read!

Sandy Lincoln seems to have the perfect life. She's a great student, is a popular cheerleader, has a boyfriend she cares deeply about, and enjoys the love of a stable family. But then the unthinkable happens - she gets pregnant. Suddenly, her dreams seem to be falling apart, and she is forced to choose between what her boyfriend wants her to do and what her heart is dictating. The decision she makes leads her to move in with her aunt in Atlanta, and the day of her move she encounters a strange woman who delivers a prophecy and a warning about the choice Sandy must make. Over 30 years later, a pregnant teen seeks out Sandy for support and advice. Sandy soon finds herself embroiled in a conflict with a school counselor who seems to be pressuring the teen to choose abortion, and an allegation is made that Sandy is pushing her own pro-life agenda on the teen. Sandy's decision to help the teen despite the costs ends up bringing Sandy face-to-face with her own past choices, and places Sandy's very life at risk.

I found The Choice to be vintage Robert Whitlow, a compulsive read that was impossible to put down, both entertaining and thought-provoking at the same time. I absolutely devoured this book, as I was so caught up in Sandy's world, from the social stigma she encountered to the emotional growth she experiences, to the amazing forgiveness she finds in the arms of Jesus. Whitlow continues to excel at creating believable characters who are as real as a member of your own family. Sandy's story as a teen was as equally engaging as the second half of her story, when she chooses to help the pregnant teen in her role as a teacher, and finds herself facing an unexpected lawsuit. The story has twists that I didn't even anticipate, and ended up being so much more than I even thought. It would be impossible to read this story and not appreciate the incredibly complex choices that women face with unwanted pregnancies, the choices between abortion or keeping the baby or adopting it out. I loved how this story affirms the utter rightness of choosing to give a baby life, and yet it does so in such a natural manner that it does not at all come across as preachy. Numerous times while reading this book, I was thinking to myself, this should be a movie! Here's hoping!

I can say with utter certainty that fans of previous works from Robert Whitlow are going to absolutely love this book. And if you've never given him a try, here's your chance - you won't be disappointed! I award this book 5 out of 5 stars and my highest recommendation.

I hope you make "The Choice" to read this book

The Choice by Robert Whitlow is a novel that I didn't want to put down. The storyline took some interesting turns and kept me turning the pages. The book included some controversial topics such as teen pregnancy, adoption, and abortion without being "judgmental" or preachy. It was refreshing to hear a solid argument for adoption as a choice. The reader will enjoy getting to know the personalities of the characters within the pages of this book. The sign of a good book is when it brings out emotions in the reader; empathy, joy, sadness, etc. and I found this to be true for me.
I definitely recommend this book. I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Provocative and compelling!

Robert Whitlow crafts a provocative tale of love, dilemma, and regret in The Choice. The novel opens as a popular, energetic, high-school cheerleader discovers she is pregnant -- an unintended interruption to her carefully planned future.

A strange encounter at a convenience store brings an ominous prophecy to Sandy. She moves to Atlanta to live with her aunt through the duration of her pregnancy. After her twins are born and placed with adoptive families, the novel moves forward thirty-four years when Sandy meets a young girl faciing a similiar predicament. This encounter forces Sandy to revisit her past, and her difficult decision.

Since the birth of her children, Sandy has developed a disciplined, successful life in the same town in which she grew up. After a failed relationship in college, she has chosen to live alone, and not pursue marriage. The doubts and questions about those decisions she made during the tumultuous months before the twins' birth have been carefully kept below the surface, but Sandy is can no longer keep them tucked away. She deals with them as she helps this student face the same situation.

Few Christian authors would tackle this topic and handle it with such grace. Robert Whitlow does so masterfully. Gone is the stereotypical judgment the church sometimes interjects in such stories. Instead, the issue has a face. The issue has a name. The pregnancy is a baby, not just a difficulty.

This book will force you to think through your own perspectives, your own judgments, and replace them with grace. It is a must-read for all who work with teens: parents, youth pastors, teachers, principals, and more. It is a winner!
