Years of delightful thinking

The chess study is a chess problem of the type: White to move and win, or, White to move and draw. The author defines a "miniature chess study" as one that involves a total of 7 pieces or less on the board. So, it's like resolving an end-game situation. This book is a classic collection of miniature studies. Now I like chess problems - although I am not particularly skilled at solving them. In this book, the solution appears under the diagram that sets out the study. Normally I find this annoying because you can't help looking at the solution. But when I read the solution to the first problem, it was truly delightful. So I changed my tune and decided that I will read this book for enjoyment. I will read the problems and their solutions to enjoy the solutions rather than to take delight(?) in solving (or more likely not solving) the problems. I assume that +- under a problem means "White to move and win" and "=" under a problem means "White to move and draw": this could have been explained. The author is famous in chess problem circles; look him up. The English is delightful. It's a nice book to hold: good size, well bound; would fit well in my brief case; many photographs are scattered throughout the book; it would make a good present for a chess enthusiast; you won't find this book in your corner store; it will provide me with years of delightful thinking.

This will take a lifetime of study. Relatively good quality printing with clear diagrams. Lots of material, so diagrams and solutions somewhat crammed together, which means you'll need to read with an index card to hide solutions. If you are a patzer like me, you'll need to set up on a board.

Almost as good as a personal consulting

I took a 7 week long (2hours a week) workshop with the author and read this book during the workshop and after. The book is almost like having Kathy inside your home to figure out how to make Vastu work for you! It's amazing the changes that have occured within my roommate and my sense of ease now that my house is vastu perfected :) I even began to bring it into the workplace and the changes were amazing. Before I left my job I took my meditation belongings home and the energy around me and throughout my small workplace immediately became less friendly. If you feel like you're looking for something and you're constantly running away from your apartment read this book! It will help you recognize exactly how to make your home a sanctuary for yourself, animals, family, and even roommates! Not to mention guests.

Best Book on Vastu!!!

I practice yoga--seriously. I just heard about vastu and bought this book after someone told me it was the best book to read on this ancient science. I enjoyed it immensely and found it so logical to follow and understand. I've started to re-organize much of my apartment. Already, it looks so much nicer and really does make me feel much more comfortable and calm. I highly recommend this book to everyone--especially people who do yoga--the two go together for sure.

Who knew you could change your life so much by simply moving your bed or computer? I couldn't recommend a better book to learn how to improve your health, your job, even your romantic life. Forget all those male/female books that try getting you to color your hair or spend crazy amounts of time at coffee shops. This book lets you know the most significant changes come from within.

Jens Brockmeier teaches at the Free University of Berlin. Since 1995 he has also been a Visiting Professor at the University of Toronto/OISE. He has published in the fields of psychology, philosophy, linguistics, and the history of culture.

Min Wang has a post-doctoral fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to work at the Learning Research and Development Center of the University of Pittsburgh.

David R. Olson is University Professor at the University of Toronto/OISE. He is past-president of the Canadian Psychological Association and was co-director of the McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto. His research on cognition, language development, and literacy has resulted in numerous books.

About the Author

Charles Carroll is an independent consultant. Initially educated at the U.S. Naval Academy, he later earned an MS in Systems Management at the University of Southern California and served as a Supply, Logistics and Systems Officer in the Marine Corps. He then worked at Sprint Corporation and General Electric’s Employers Reinsurance Corporation (ERC), where he was trained and certified as an internal consultant in GE’s Six Sigma Quality processes,served as a Master Black Belt for the IT Department, administered the local and offshore outsourcing programs, automated project management, and established a global Project Management Office within ERC’s IT department.

Charlie serves as an independent consultant in project/program/PMO management, process improvement, and application development. He has written articles for a number of professional publications, spoken at domestic and international conferences, and developed a number of project management and Six Sigma tools and training for clients. I had a lot of fun researching puzzles and games for this book.  I tried many different ones.  Not all made it into this book. My goal was to put together a fun assortment of programs that could demonstrate a broad range of Java graphical user interface techniques, but still not be too difficult to write.

I specifically chose both the "try-it" approach for the book, and the programs the reader will write, to appeal to people who like to solve puzzles.  Do you like to solve puzzles?  If so, you may enjoy programming too.

Annette Godtland is a computer programmer who worked at IBM for 20 years then Kingland Systems Corporation for 5 years. She now considers herself to be a hobby programmer. She particularly enjoys programming computer games and working with all forms of computer graphics.

Many years ago, Annette created course materials and taught a beginning programming class for 4th through 6th grade students. She enjoyed it so much that she always wanted to try making her course into a book. She finally did it in her book: Do-It-Yourself Java Games: An Introduction to Java Computer Programming. This book is the first in a planned series of do-it-yourself Java programming books, intended for junior high to high school students as well as adults, as a means to explore an interest in computer programming.

Great Introduction to Java Graphics Programming

I have used this book and the companion book Do-It-Yourself Java Games twice in a course teaching non computer science majors to program. The students started with Do-It-Yourself Java Games and proceeded on to this book. The students loved the books and learned far more than in other courses I have taught at this level. I highly recommend these books to anyone wanting to learn Java programming and to anyone wanting to get students excited about computer science.

Do-It-Yourself Java Games, gives students an excellent background in Java programming. The games in this book are all text-based, but they are imaginative and fun. The students thoroughly enjoyed creating them. The tutorial approach worked extremely well in guiding the students along in learning programming. Once the students had completed those tutorials, they were ready for this book. In my course, the students worked at their own pace with most progressing far into or completing this book, which features games with Java Swing graphics and event-driven programming. I've never seen students get so excited by textbooks. I did virtually no teaching in the course. Instead, I worked one-on-one or in small group settings with students. During our four week January Term the course was scheduled to meet for two hours and forty-five minutes. Most students showed up fifteen to thirty minutes early and left thirty to forty-five minutes late.

A number of the students have actually gone on to become computer science majors. These students have proven to have an excellent background for more advanced courses.

I have taught introductory programming courses for many years. These are the best books I have ever used for getting students interested in and excited about computer programming. If someone wants to learn Java programming and then try out Java Swing graphics programming while having a lot of fun, I strongly recommend these books.

Excellent Java Swing Book for Teaching / Learning

Superb book. I had been struggling to find books, videos, or websites that would be a good resource to help me teach Java Swing to my high school computer science students – this book works! Within minutes a project begins taking shape on the computer screen, for immediate feedback and reward. The project proceeds in baby steps, so every time you write a line or two of code you see exactly what that code does. Every page has fill-in-the blanks sections, encouraging you to actually think about what should be next rather than just quickly copying the author’s code. The many projects have a very nice progression from very simple to moderately complex. Overall, this is by far the best single resource I have ever found to really learn how to program Java Swing. I am eagerly looking forward to the next two books that author Annette Godtland is working on, and will purchase them the moment I learn they are available. I purchased both the Kindle, and paperback versions of this book and prefer the paperback.

As I stated in my review of the first book, what makes Annette so good and unique is that she is the perfect combination of someone who really understands her subject matter and someone who knows how to teach that subject without being boring or condescending. Through 13 projects that get progressively more complex, MDIY Java Games builds on the concepts learned in the first book, teaching you so much about Java graphics and event-driven programming. And just as in the DIY Java Games, what makes the projects in this book so good and rewarding is that again, THEY ALL WORK! Again, that makes such a difference when learning programming, to see the programs you spend so much time typing actually come to life and do what they're supposed to.It keeps you going.

The author is working on the 3rd book in this series, Advanced Do-It-Yourself Java Games:An Introduction to Java Threads and Animated Video Games, which hopefully will be released by the end of this year. If it is the same quality of instruction and content as the first 2 books, and I have no reason to see why it won't be, it will be another must-get if you want to learn to continue to grow your Java programming skills. a awesome sequel

With this novel, Bueno is off and running. Picking up the pieces from the first novel in the series, and using the same inviting tone and brilliant storytelling he draws you in right from the get-go and doesn’t let go until the very end. He recaps just enough to jog the reader’s memory as to who’s who and who did what in the first novel, but doesn’t overdo it or bore his readers. By using the same great flow and easy to follow dialogue he ties the stories together quite nicely while taking off with a different part of this brilliant story. That said, this instalment is more intense than its predecessor, yet is still a mellow, light read that is very easy to immerse yourself in fully. This sequel is also a lot more brooding, but we really get to the heart of the story with that.

The characters in this novel continue to grow as individuals and as friends. They are each developed so individually that as a reader you get to see the minute differences in their reactions to a single event. It’s quite a trip. The new characters that Bueno introduces in this instalment are also quite well developed and add to the storyline as a whole. You’ll also note that the supporting cast from the first novel become much more fully developed as their roles in the story grow.

Overall, this was a brilliant sequel to the first singularity novel, drawing you deeper into this world of magic and secrecy. At the end, I was only left with a single question: with this twisted ending, how will it all work out in the end?

I received a complimentary copy of Broken Spell from the author. This did not effect my honest review!

I loved the first book in the Singularity series, Wicked Sense…so I was excited to have the opportunity to read this new installation. I was not disappointed! It was good to see the gang back, I had really enjoyed and become attached to these characters. In Broken Spell, Drake and Skye beat the odds in Wicked Sense to be with one another and so now the pair must continue to beat those same odds to stay together!

Of course with the two teens dealing with maturing and overwhelming feelings; throw in the mix the formidable mission of protecting and shielding the Singularity until she has reach her fullest potential with her powers–plus the increasingly alarming dealings with the Coven– and there is never a dull moment.

When tragedy strikes the group comes together to face the challenge, endearing the group once again to me as a reader:)

A slew of twist and turns! Action abounds, the story is fast paced, laced with humor and simply a great read!

I looked forward to the next in the Singularity series and have become an avid fan of Author Fabio Bueno!

I Highly recommend Broken Spell for those who enjoy the Paranormal and Supernatural!

I really loved this book. Great series.

I just loved this book. I really loved the first book Wicked Sense and was so happy to be able to read this 2nd one. I really wanted to know what was going on with Skye and Drake. I loved the guessing that took place for us. I still love how it swaps between Drake and Skye point of views, makes it really interesting.

I love this world of the witches the author created, and it takes place not too far from where I live, Seattle, which is cool.

I won’t add spoilers, as I know some may not have read book one yet. But want to say how great this series is. Try is, it’s worth it.

I give 5 out of 5 stars, highly recommended.

Grade 9 Up–This resource, arranged alphabetically, contains approximately 450 entries offering biographies and information on countries, states, peoples, companies, policies, empires, and trade organizations. In addition, historical episodes such as the decline of the Roman Empire are discussed in light of how they shaped global trade, religion, war, immigration, exploration, and transportation. Readers will find a fascinating array of topics from the expected (spices) to the unexpected (descriptions of animals such as donkeys and their contributions to trade). See also references will lead students to other pertinent information, and each entry concludes with a short bibliography. An outstanding feature of the set is the succinct statement/definition at the beginning of each entry. Other prominent and useful properties are the topic finder and three indexes. Volume four contains a selection of primary sources listed chronologically from the Code of Hammurabi to the Agreement Establishing the World Trade Organization in 1995. Black-and-white photographs, illustrations, and maps are located throughout the encyclopedia. With today's interest in globalization, classes across the curriculum will find multiple uses for this reference set. This alphabetically arranged encyclopedia is designed as a reference tool for those wishing to learn about trade in history and its impact on social and political issues in given periods. Treating the subject across time, from the ancient world to the present, the 450 topical, biographical, and broad-issue essays cover a variety of topics, from specific countries, regions, and continents to trade organizations, such as the Hanseatic League and World Trade Organization, to biographical entries for those who have influenced world commerce, such as Christopher Columbus and Peter the Great. Historical episodes that have altered the course of trade (for example, the fall of the Roman Empire) are included as well, along with lengthier essays on general topics that correlate with changing trade relations, such as Religion and Warfare.

Entries range in length from several columns to 10 pages, with areas of broader reach and applicability receiving appropriately more coverage. Each entry begins with a grey-boxed definition of the term under scrutiny and is followed by a detailed examination. The prose, written by numerous subject experts, most with college or university affiliations, is generally clear but dry. Each entry ends with a list of cross-references, and many also include short print bibliographies. The many black-and-white photographs, period reproductions, and maps are well placed and ably serve to extend the text. Volume 1 lists the contents for the entire set, as well as a "Topic Finder," which serves as a rough subject access. It also contains a list of contributors, with affiliations, and the list of maps for the entire set. All volumes contain full set indexes, and volume 4 has a comprehensive bibliography; a chronology; general, biographical, and geographical indexes; and an extensive set of primary source documents.

The set does a creditable job of addressing the most salient issues in the history of world trade and serves to highlight its importance. It is a sound addition to academic and large public library collections. Ann Welton

About the Author
CYNTHIA CLARK NORTHRUP teaches at the University of Texas, Arlington. Her field of specialization is modern U.S. history with an emphasis on political and economic issues.

Jerry H. Bentley (1949 2012) was a Professor of History at the University of Hawai i, M noa. Educated at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and the University of Minnesota, his early research focused on Renaissance humanist scholarship of the Bible, but after coming to Hawai i in 1976 he emerged as one of the international leaders in world history scholarship and teaching. He published a wide range of articles on comparative and transnational methods in history and several books, including the seminal Old World Encounters: Cross-Cultural Contact and Exchange in Pre-Modern Times (1993) and one of the most popular textbooks for teaching world history, Traditions and Encounters. He was the founding editor of the Journal of World History, and served as its editor-in-chief for twenty-two years, and was also a founding member of the World History Association in 1982. He developed standards and curriculum locally, nationally, and internationally, established a flourishing PhD program in world history at the University of Hawai'i, directed numerous seminars for scholars and teachers across the globe, and fostered a world history program at Capital Normal University in Beijing.

Alfred E. Eckes, Jr., a former chairman and commissioner of the U.S. International Trade Commission, is Ohio Eminent Research Professor in Contemporary History at Ohio University. His books include "The United States and the Global Struggle for Minerals".

Kenneth Pomeranz is University Professor in History and the College, University of Chicago. His work focuses mostly on China, though he is also very interested in comparative and world history. His publications include The Great Divergence: China, Europe, and the Making of the Modern World Economy (2000), which won the John K. Fairbank Prize from the AHA, and shared the World History Association book prize and has been translated into seven languages; The Making of a Hinterland: State, Society and Economy in Inland North China, 1853 1937 (1993), which also won the Fairbank Prize; The World that Trade Created (with Steven Topik, first edition 1999, 3rd edition 2012), and a collection of essays recently published in France. He has also edited or co-edited five books, and was one of the founding editors of the Journal of Global History. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the American Philosophical Society, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Institute for Advanced Studies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and other sources. In 2012 he was elected president of the American Historical Association.
