About the Author

Jacqueline Bauman-Waengler has been a professor for over 25 years. She has presented and published widely regionally, nationally, and internationally in the areas of phonetics/phonology, speech sound disorders in children and adults, and child language. In addition to the Fifth Edition of Articulation and Phonology in Speech Sound Disorders: A Clinical Focus, she has also published Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology: From Concepts to Transcription with Pearson in 2009. She is currently working as a speech/language specialist in Pleasant Valley School District and a consultant for Western Psychological Corporation in Los Angeles, CA.

About the Author
His teacher, Arnold Schoenberg, said JOHN CAGE was "not a composer but an inventor of genius." Composer, author, and philosopher, John Cage was born in Los Angeles in 1912 and by the age of 37 had been recognized by the American Academy of Arts for having extended the boundaries of music.

Nothing Has Been The Same

It's always a strange sensation for me to go into a record store, or even see what's available here, and find so many John Cage recordings in print. As the most essential and avant-garde composer of the century, that's gratifying to me [a composer] but also unnerving that anyone so experimental and uncompromising in the arts would enjoy such popularity.
This book goes a long way towards explaining that. And in many ways, this book stands apart from his music, and can be enjoyed without ever hearing or knowing of Cage's music pieces. Because the music was almost by accident - Schoenberg told Cage that he was an inventor, not a composer, and this book demonstrates that, and goes further to show Cage was a philosopher. Music just happened to be the medium where he best expressed his philosophy, but it could have been painting or film, depending on his path. The book defines a way of living and thinking and seeing, and of course hearing, the world. That's what it's about. And it's beautiful and gentle quality capture the essence of Cage, a true quiet revolutionary. His revolution was profound, and best expressed in his piano piece 4'33", where the pianist does not make a sound at the instrument. The revolution of that event was the most profound and destabilizing in the history of music, and yet it was entirely silent. Such is the power of Cage's ideas that he has no need to really 'lecture' about them, he merely presents them and let's their own strength do the rest.

don't buy the Kindle edition

The Kindle edition is just a collection of scanned pages. The text doesn't reflow, and doesn't zoom. It is microscopic on an ordinary Kindle. The book is marked as "optimized for large screens" but it is really just an extremely lazy attempt at an ebook. I expected reflowable text and a few large images of Cage's visual scores. What I got was unusable on my Kindle.

great book: DON'T BUY THE KINDLE VERSION!

This is one of my favorite books on music, for sure, but the Kindle edition is making me crazy!!! I read on the iPad and have to magnify each page to get the type readable: each page is an image, so no highlighting, annotating etc. is possible, but there's a GIANT margin around the page, which if it had been utilized, would make a totally readable font-size. CRAZY-MAKING!!! a pdf version would at least be possible to mark up using the various PDF readers out there.

what are publishers thinking?!?! PLEASE put some more effort into creating e-reader versions: or at least warn the buyer ahead of time that most e-reader functionality will be unavailable.

okay, rant over. enjoy the book, it's life-changingly wonderful!!!

Outstanding addition to the naval history of WW2

The radio controlled glider bombs used by the Luftwaffe to sink the new Italian battleship Roma, and seriously damage the veteran British dreadnought Warspite made a spectacular entrance into combat in WW2, then seemed to become less and less effective over time. These highly advanced weapons get passing mention in a number of works, but this is the first book to do a detailed technical and operational study working from original documents. Nor are the men who created, deployed and countered these futuristic devices overlooked - the book is filled with description and background on the scientists and aircrew who designed and deployed the bombs and countermeasures.

This book provides very technical information on the radio equipment and radio control links, but also includes clear descriptions and analogies so that even a non-technical person can understand how the system worked and what were the advantages and disadvantages. A particularly welcome feature is the detailed analysis of each attack, going back to original captain's damage reports and survivor interviews to determine how the attack was carried out and how successful it was.

The description of the development and operation of electronic counter-measures is very complete. You can see how the first systems, based on limited and sometimes incorrect information, were replaced over time with far more effective systems based on complex intelligence activities, for which a very complete accounting is provided.

The final chapters analyze the effectiveness of the weapon by type of attack, unit involved and level of countermeasures. An epilogue follows many of the key individuals into their post-war careers.

One could not ask for a more complete and satisfactory work of history. This book becomes a treasured and most welcome addition to my library.

The story of the Smart bombs of World War II

In 1990, during the opening rounds of Operation Desert Storm, viewers sat glued to the television set watching footage of precision guided munitions dissecting Iraqi targets. No longer did bombers have to level city blocks to destroy a target. Instead, targeteers could pick a window in a facility to hit with a bomb. While some would credit Americans with the development of the smart bomb, these weapons first appeared almost 50 years earlier by German scientists. In "Warriors and Wizards", by Martin Bollinger, readers gain insight into how the electronics wizards from the Axis and the Allies fought in the electromagnetic spectrum.

On August 25, 1943 Do 217 bombers unleashed one of Hitler's secret weapons on an Allied task force operating off the coast of France. The Allies, aware of the new weapon, were waiting with electronic eavesdropping equipment to identify how the Germans were controlling the new weapons. Over the next year, English and American scientists would begin a race to build electronic countermeasures capable of defeating these new remote controlled bombs.

As the scientists fought these opening rounds of electronic warfare, kinetic losses were taking effect on the Luftwaffe aircraft and aircrews. While new bombs and aircraft could be manufactured, only time and successful missions could replace the loss of the experienced aircrews failing to return to German airfields.

Bollinger uses primary sources from German and Allied archives to reconstruct and tell the story of the Luffwaffe missions against Allied ships. Due to Allied censorship during the war, many of the original battle damage reports attributed the glide bomb damage to torpedos. Bollinger's expert research ensures the reader learns the true success of both the weapons and the countermeasures.

This was an absolutely fascinating book. The well-written text is expertly supported with numerous charts, and period black & white photographs. I highly recommend this book to readers interested in World War II.

The Best Work...

Bollinger has provided an excellent account of the first aerial "guided missiles" employed against warships. Did you know that one of these guided bombs sank a battleship, underway at sea? The book has three major (and many minor) strongpoints:

First, it is comprehensive...providing a detailed account of ALL air-to-surface attacks by German aircraft with guided bombs; second it details the allied countermeasures--successes and failures; and, third, the book is very well written.

Some years ago I reviewed his first book--STALIN'S SLAVE SHIPS--an effort that convinced me of Bollinger's expertise as a historian and his excellent writing style.

Great book for teachers!

Great book for school teachers! It teaches a specific plan of action if a dangerous person "wolf" gets into the school and shows how a class of students practices this in a school drill, like a fire drill. It prepares the children for lock down procedures such as locking the door, staying out of sight, spreading out, grabbing something to throw at the wolf while we run in a zigzag and make strange noises if he should come into the classroom. It might also be good for parents because these are ideas do seem to be useful. I wish there were more books like this out there specifically for parents to go over with their children at home.

Excellent book for kids!

While teaching children crisis response goes back 50 years for fire training, it is new in the field of active shooter and terrorism. Julia's book is a how to train manual for our times. After teaching ALICE for the past several years, the book provided a refreshing take for me and can only improve survival and coping skills in young children. My own seven year old read the book and thought it was great! Teaching things that are potentially scary in a very non-scary way for children has been a hallmark of ALICE training from the start. Julia captures the training in a perfect way for children and makes it easy to understand. This book should be required reading in every K-2 classroom in America...and not only for the kids!

It was ok. Talk about jumping right into sex. I'm not sure that if, I fell from a cliff, hurt my back and leg, rescued by a stranger and brought back to a cabin with another big guy, that I would be creaming my jeans about them. I think I'd be in a little too much pain for a few days. It also jumped time. Lost a lot in this book.

I need an air conditioner going full blast! This book has sizzling sex scenes with 2 hotties and 1 lady built for 2! Great read! Readers may want to grab a glass of ice water and a 5 ton air conditioner set on 40 degrees to keep cool while reading this!
