An Incredible Book-Highly Recommended

At first I was skeptical, after all, Letters directly from God? But then I realized God, has many different names and means different things to different people. And isn't it me who is fond of telling friends the word "enthusiasm" literally means "the god within" according to some sources and "inspired" by others? And so I put my skepticism aside and dug in.

As I began to read I found myself totally absorbed and moved - especially by Chapter 3 "Gifts". "Seek first to understand and identify your gifts. Then take action. Any action is a good action".

I found much of the book to be filled with truly inspirational advice "If you want to write, just pick up a pen and write. If you don't know how -- learn. Read before you write." and "Learning is a way of life. Learning is a process of being and becoming. You have gifts that you can choose. You have lessons to learn. You have a journey to take." And can't all of us benefit from these words: "Take any idea that you have, right now. Practice this. Take any idea, and manipulate it in your mind. Alter it. Look at it from many aspects, and see how it changes and morphs into something different. See how it is easy to shift and to control. That is a good and powerful thing. Now, examine a belief you have in your heart. Notice how difficult it is to change the belief. Notice how that is firm and steady, and see how much it is embedded in your life and your choices. That is because it is rooted and part of your being. This is how you can understand the difference between the mind and the heart."

I also found most of the book to be filled with universally accepted truths and especially liked "Fleeting thoughts will not hurt you. It's when you infuse them with negative belief that they harm you. If negative thoughts pass through your mind--dismiss them. Make sure you do not welcome them into your heart. You can reject words in your mind. Once you plant them in your heart and begin to believe them, then they take root and have power. Dismiss them when they are in your mind, and move forward."

Whether this book is from God, defined as an external divine entity or from the god that resides within Barbara Miller, you MUST read it. It will fill you with optimism, hope and belief in yourself. I am looking so forward to a re-read and know that it will increase in its importance to my life. Mighty Inspiration by Barbara Bernard Miller spoke to my soul and moved me in such an unexpected way. It's the book I wish I had written.

Mighty Inspiration is Awesome

Mighty Inspiration: Love Letters From God by Barbara Bernard Miller, a beautiful, hardcover book is a powerful 15 chapters and 115 pages published by Eloquent Books of New York, copyright 2009. I could actually feel God's presence as I read this amazing book, written as though God is speaking to you, and He is through the words He instructed Barbara to write.
Chapter 3 on Gifts is an encouraging, thought-provoking one. The first lesson is to choose your gifts correctly--for the good of mankind, see God in everything you do, and send Him your cares and worries, so He will send you peace and joy.

Barbara writes with such intensity that you become lost in the words and feel God's presence. At least, I did as I
read. Chapter 4 on Joy reveals how all things, even tragic and sad events, provide an opportunity to become closer to God. She never uses the word God in the book and uses only capitalized pronouns like He I, or Me, so I substitute God or Jesus as I read. The book explains why God doesn't prevent all things from happening, because if He did so, He'd take away CHOICE. Choice provides growth and development. This chapter says that learning is lifelong and knowledge is the cornerstone for development. As the book says, "Teach as you learn, and you will be doubly blessed. Seek Me."

Chapter 5 is about passion and reminds me of my passions of reading, writing, and teaching. It says, "Your passion for your gifts will give them power and sustain them in your life." It goes on to explain how we've been given passion for some things and not for others, so our gifts will grow, develop, and be used. According to this chapter, the mind is for imagination and reasoning, and the heart is for passion and belief. Ideas sprout in the mind, but they must be planted in the heart and can only blossom there. God gave us so much power when He gave us the power of CHOICE, but many times we do not realize how powerful choice can be. We do not have the power to change others, but we have the freedom of choice to change ourselves by changing how we think, act, and react. We need our quiet time for reflection. I know this personally, and I value those quiet moments with God and time to pause and reflect. "I weave My messages into the hearts and minds of those who will reach out to Me. They pass the message along throughout the world in those momentary touches with other lives." In this way, we all have the power to make a true difference in the world.

As I read about God's message being woven into minds and hearts, I was reminded of using a weaving loom as a young girl and how carefully I had to weave the brightly-colored yarn to make a product, to make a difference, to make something that would benefit and withstand. As a farmer tills the soil and adds fertilizer to make the ground fertile, we must till our minds and fertilize them with God's Word. Only then, will we experience real, true peace and joy. Only then, can we truly make a real difference.

Barb serves as an authentic 'Messenger" that conveys a genuinely energetic notion that we are amazing, in our own ways, and to utilize our time and talent while on this Earth for a specific purpose.

It is an encouragingly empowering conglomeration of truthful words, placed in a context that feels as if it is a personal letter to each of us. In a world where we are all too often 'spiritually deprieved' and imprisoned in our own expectations, Barb ("The Messenger") reminds us that we are here to provide our gifts for the Almighty's awesome plan for us. We just need to listen, and then take authentic action.

She reminds us also that we are a gift, have blessings we may not always see, and are being shaped and molded by "The Creator" for our significance. Realizing these reminders and more, inspires our journey to living a free and meaningful life around what really matters.

All too often, we are bombarded by so much, lists, distractions, achievements, performance, duties, jobs, and more, and wonder if 'there's more', and this book serves in a way for those going through the process of an 'awakening'. About the Author
Scott Wiggerman is the author of two books of poetry, Vegetables and Other Relationships (Plain View Press, 2000) and Presence (Pecan Grove Press, 2011). Recent publications with poems by Wiggerman include Switched-on Gutenberg, BorderSenses, Poemeleon, Broad River Review, Boxcar Poetry Review, and Southwestern American Literature. Wiggerman has edited several anthologies and books, including Big Land, Big Sky, Big Hair. A frequent workshop instructor, he is lead editor of Dos Gatos Press, publisher of the annual Texas Poetry Calendar, now in its fourteenth year.

David Meischen has been writing poetry and teaching the writing of poetry for twenty- five years. He was the Master Teacher in English for UTeach-Liberal Arts, the teacher preparation program in the College of Liberal Arts, University of Texas, Austin, 2002- 2006. He has had poems in The Southern Review, Southern Poetry Review, Borderlands, Cider Press Review, and other journals, as well as Two Southwests (Virtual Artists Collective, 2008), which features poets from the southwest of China and the United States. Meischen is a co-founder and Managing Editor of Dos Gatos Press.

Dare to create!!

I've purchased and tried to use many creative writing books over the years and I have to say that Wingbeats is one of the best because it has exercises from so many different authors. Some of the exercises are very involved, some are quite simple, all of them will challenge you to think about words and how you put them together into a poem in a new way. I really like a lot of the exercises because they appeal to my sense of word-play and fun and those are always great ways to enter into writing a poem. Not only are there a variety of exercises but each exercise can be varied in the way you do it. I was lucky enough to take a writing workshop with one of the editors, Scott Wiggerman, so I had a week of firsthand, hands on use with the exercises in the book. I don't think I've ever come up with so many great ideas in such a short amount of time. I highly recommend the book.

Wingbeats: Exercises and Practice in Poetry

I am a writer of poetry and am always looking for books that help me improve my craft. Wingbeats is a great book filled with exercises that will challenge you to leave your comfort zone and experiment with new forms and styles. The book is filled with poetry from the contributers themselves which adds a personal touch to it. I highly recommend this book for any lover and writer of poetry no matter if you are a beginner or an expert. It is also a fabulous resource for any poetry workshop or group. One of the exercises by Wendy Barker is "A Crack in the Cup". After I went through the exercise I found myself writing a poem about a childhood memory of eating a late-night snack out of my father's deep cereal bowl. You never know where these exercises will lead you but the journey is bound to bring up deeply rich experiences.

Wonderful resource!

Wingbeats is an amazing gift to anyone wishing to learn and practice the art of poetry. For a price far less than attending a single poetry class, the reader gets to study with dozens of skilled teachers and poets. Each exercise includes examples of poems resulting from the described technique, and those poems alone make the book worth buying. My volume is already dog-eared, and I've barely scratched the surface. Thank you to Dos Gatos Press for this incredible collection.

Financial Modelling - Theory, Implementation and Practice is a unique combination of quantitative techniques, the application to financial problems and programming using Matlab. The book enables the reader to model, design and implement a wide range of financial models for derivatives pricing and asset allocation, providing practitioners with complete financial modelling workflow, from model choice, deriving prices and Greeks using (semi-) analytic and simulation techniques, and calibration even for exotic options.

The book is split into three parts. The first part considers financial markets in general and looks at the complex models needed to handle observed structures, reviewing models based on diffusions including stochastic-local volatility models and (pure) jump processes. It shows the possible risk neutral densities, implied volatility surfaces, option pricing and typical paths for a variety of models including SABR, Heston, Bates, Bates-Hull-White, Displaced-Heston, or stochastic volatility versions of Variance Gamma, respectively Normal Inverse Gaussian models and finally, multi-dimensional models. The stochastic-local-volatility Libor market model with time-dependent parameters is considered and as an application how to price and risk-manage CMS spread products is demonstrated.

The second part of the book deals with numerical methods which enables the reader to use the models of the first part for pricing and risk management, covering methods based on direct integration and Fourier transforms, and detailing the implementation of the COS, CONV, Carr-Madan method or Fourier-Space-Time Stepping. This is applied to pricing of European, Bermudan and exotic options as well as the calculation of the Greeks. The Monte Carlo simulation technique is outlined and bridge sampling is discussed in a Gaussian setting and for Lévy processes. Computation of Greeks is covered using likelihood ratio methods and adjoint techniques. A chapter on state-of-the-art optimization algorithms rounds up the toolkit for applying advanced mathematical models to financial problems and the last chapter in this section of the book also serves as an introduction to model risk.

The third part is devoted to the usage of Matlab, introducing the software package by describing the basic functions applied for financial engineering. The programming is approached from an object-oriented perspective with examples to propose a framework for calibration, hedging and the adjoint method for calculating Greeks in a Libor Market model.

About the Author

Jörg Kienitz is head of Quantitative Analytics at Deutsche Postbank AG. He is primarily involved in developing and implementing models for pricing complex derivatives structures and for asset allocation. He also lectures at university level on advanced financial modelling and implementation including the University of Oxford’s part-time Masters of Finance course. Jörg works as an independent consultant for model development and validation as well as giving seminars for finance professionals. He is a speaker at the major financial conferences including Global Derivatives, WBS Fixed Income or RISK. Jörg is the member of the editorial board of International Review of Applied Financial Issues and Economics and holds a Ph.D. in stochastic analysis from the University of Bielefeld.

Daniel Wetterau is senior specialist in the Quantitative Analytics team of Deutsche Postbank AG. He is responsible for the implementation of term structure models, advanced numerical methods, optimization algorithms and methods for advanced quantitative asset allocation. Further to his work he teaches finance courses for market professionals. Daniel received a Masters in financial mathematics from the University of Wuppertal and was awarded the Barmenia mathematics award for his thesis.

Excellent Book for practitioners and researchers in the Financial Engineering industry.

I am currently a Master's Student doing my dissertation on Stochastic Volatility models (with application to equity,interest rate and crerdit derivatives). This book can be judged to be relatively easy to read once you have worked through at least 2 graduate courses in financial engineering and if you have a solid mathematical and mathematical statistics background. Thus in my opinion if you don't meet this criteria then don't buy as the book will be hard to read (as commented by some of my colleges who specialize in other fields).

However I find this book to be more of practitioner's book than a theoretical course. Most of the main results are presented without depth (although references are included) and the aim of the book is focused on real world application. There are many real world examples, particularly at the start of the book in the introductory chapters. To give a potential buyer an indication of what the book entails we can split the book into three parts:

Part 1 Covers Financial Markets and many of the popular models one would use. The chapters range from the characteristics of the market, working through diffusion and jump models and finally ending with multi-dimensional models. The content gives a great overview of all the tools in the industry, particularly the stochastic volatility models. Many topics are covered relating to risk neutral densities of each model, the characteristic functions and how the models reproduce the skew and smile effects seen in the market. Additionally source code is provided which makes the implementation in Matlab easy.

Part 2 is the essence of the book and the Authors have even named it "Numerical Methods and Recipes". This is essential to my research and some of the advance topics (e.g. The cosine method to valuing barrier options) and Monte Carlo Simulation techniques were new to me, although the exposition by the authors certainly didn't impede my understanding of these topics. The great part is the source code that the authors gave to implement some of these strategies in Matlab. Additionally in some cases an algorithm is given with the accompanying source code. The advantage of the former is that it makes the implementation of the scheme possible in other programming languages (which is useful if your advisor doesn't share your love of Matlab!). The experienced practitioner is likely to only read this part of the book as it covers many numerical schemes to be used in option pricing under various models.

Part 3 is interesting. The authors give an overview of Matlab, although I believe the reader is better off first having experience in Matlab before reading this section in chapter 11. My reasons are that the progression is rather fast and this chapter is a useful recapitulation in case you haven't worked with a particular toolbox before (assuming you have this toolbox installed). Chapter 12 goes into more advance uses of Matlab including my favourite part regarding the development of a calibration engine for equity models. I believe this is the best part of the entire Part 3. The last chapter includes a section on the fundamental mathematics required and used in the book. I would think this is useful for the practitioner that needs a bit of a review having been out of university for some time. Those in the academia would probably skip it and the reader wanting to read the book by first working through this section is advised not to: The chapter is too self-contained and technical unless you already know the content.

In summary, this is an excellent book and deserves 5 stars. The book is definitely on a graduate level and would be suitable for research purposes as well as the practical day to day pricing of options. The book is only suitable for a technical audience.

Vintage but Still Current

First published some twenty years ago, Bill Easum's Handbook is still highly practical and packed with pragmatic insights. The author's first hand experience as a pastor combined with a wealth of observations derived from serving several years as a consultant to a variety of church congregations make this an unusually rich and practical resource. The material is meaty, insightful and well organized. The writing style is engaging and filled with poignant, well selected illustrations that stimulate the mind and bring hope to the heart of any pastor who has struggled trying to lead a congregation to healthy growth. The chapters may be read sequentially or dipped into and cherry-picked as desired. I wish I had discovered this book several years ago at the beginning of my ministry. I plan to keep it on the shelf with my handful of frequently used references. Highly recommended.

What an amazing book!!! A must read for all movers-and-shakers.

What an excellent book!! This book can be enjoyed and appreciated by anyone who is looking for improvement in his or her social life. The author provides a treasure-trove of solid, no-nonsense advice on how to improve the "quantity and quality" of one's social circle and how to rise into the higher echelons of society in any city or country. Jen goes into very minute details on how to dress, how to groom yourself, how to act in social settings, but most importantly, how to treat other people with grace, generosity and kindness.

I've been following the life of this amazing woman, Jen Su, for the last 15 years or so, and she has been through so much in her international life. The general reader can learn a lot from her wisdom and worldwide experience.

Highly recommended!!!

Trashy disaster novels can be fun, but this one is just trash.

This novel depicts an accident at a massive, newly-constructed nuclear power plant in California. Written in 1975, at a time when the energy crisis was in full swing, the novel takes aim at the booming nuclear power industry. Predating the Three Mile Island accident by several years, the book does have a prophetic feel to it which gives it some much-needed gravitas. Unfortunately, its fictional contrivances and paper-thin characters quickly undermine the story.

The book follows several characters, but centers on a nuclear engineer named Gregory Parks who is in charge of building the country's largest nuclear power plant. The story centers around the final days of the plant's construction before it is put on line. Unfortunately, the construction has not gone smoothly and their are a mounting series of accidents that point to future catastrophe. Parks wants to delay the opening, but his superiors insist on pushing the deadline forward. Predictably, a major accident occurs.

The book is told through the use of congressional testimony after the accident, so there is no suspense about whether or not something will go wrong. The only reason to continue reading is to see just how badly things go wrong and who will take the blame. Along the way, we are treated to a completely meaningless sub-plot about stolen plutonium and a murder mystery involving the plant's part-time doctor. The characters are drawn in broad strokes, to put it kindly, and the female characters are particularly hollow. The romantic thread of the plot is so tacked on and poorly developed that you have to wonder why the authors chose to include it at all.

The technical details are well researched, and it highlights some of the inner workings of a nuclear power plant quite well. It also takes great liberties with typical nuclear power plant design in order to achieve maximum disaster levels when things start to go wrong. Instead of one reactor, this plant has four. They also share the same containment building, which is patently ludicrous from the standpoint of sane engineering principles. To compound the silly design of the plant, a fuel reprocessing facility loaded with tons of spent fuel rods from other plants around the country has been added to the mix even before the plant, itself, has been put online. This adds up to a mighty big radioactive mess when things to kablooey, but strains credibility to the breaking point as well.

Ultimately, as paperback thrillers go, this one doesn't rate highly. It aims for the sort of timely, fact-checked impact of "The Andromeda Strain" but ends up falling far short. Instead, it is a fact-filled but poorly written story with little real suspense and far too many contrivances for anyone familiar with nuclear engineering.

An excellent read & frightening look at nuclear power

The Promethesus Crisis, (written around 1975) deals with a nuclear power plant melting down....and goes into detail about how this happens and its aftermath. Written some years before the 3 Mile Island Accident, this book almost seems to be an omen, warning of the dangers of nuclear power and what can happen when that "1 in a million" chance of an accident happens. A very fightening and informative book, and extremely well written.

Vernadsky has become more popular since USSR fell

Contrary to what the previous reviewer has heard, George Vernadsky was criticized during the Soviet era by the Moscow regime because he was not a Marxist but a traditional historian. His learnings were with the White forces in teh Russian Civil War and he fled Russia when the Reds won. He has become popular since the USSR collapsed because he is a "Euroasianist" who sees Russia as a multinational empire throughout history that was trying to operate (and should) as a nation. He was never opposed to Russian greatness, just to the Soviet dictatorship which had driven him from his beloved homeland; which was the Ukraine within a Greater "Eurasian" Russia stretching across to the Pacific. This grand view is popular with President Putin and other "nationalists" who want post-Soviet Russia to still be a major world power as Tsarist Russia was before the Communist Revolution.
