Planning for Indonesia vacation

This English-Indonesian dictionary is a great book to further my knowledge of the Indonesian language, or as it is called in Indonesia, bahasa Indonesia. I have some smaller books on learning the language, but they only have common words and phrases, but this English-Indonesian Dictionary has nearly every word in English that a person could possibly need and has the Indonesian word(s) for it in very descriptive terms. I am planning a great adventure to Indonesia and self-teaching the language. I purchased this book as a "used" item, but when I received it, it was in new condition. Had I not known that I purchased a "used" book, I would have just assumed it to be new, it was in such great condition. Thanks to Amazon and thanks to the seller. Great job!! This is a dissapointing book, the manufacturing and paper is of the lowest quality. I sent mine back. The print is small and not very legible.

I read the book for 5 minutes and learned 3 things

I had an opportunity to meet Ronald Bradford at a MySQL conference, and he had a few copies of his book available for reading. I was waiting for someone and had about 5 minutes to burn, so I picked up his book. I learned 3 things! I've been a system administrator for the past 15 years and thought I knew my way around MySQL enough for my needs but I was really impressed.

I had no idea about the SUPER user privilege, apparently you can do a lot of nasty things including bypassing read-only in my.cnf. I used to always 'grant all privileges', but not anymore. I had no idea there was a built in table checksum command. I've had an intermittent need to verify consistency between slaves and always resorted to something like a mysqldump | grep xxx | wc -l, which is not only primitive but has a tremendous potential for being inaccurate.

I can only imagine what I would of learned had I been able to read the entire book. It's next on my list. Once you start working with data sets >50GB you simply cannot afford to make mistakes.

Must have for any MySQl DBA

Ronald Bradford has embarked an am ambitious project to write a series of books on various facets of MySQL. The first in the series Effective MySQL: Optimizing SQL Statements arrived last fall. The second in the series, Effective MySQL: Backup and Recovery, has come off the presses. These books are well written, concise, and not full of fluff.

The second book covers an area that has caused every experienced MySQL DBA some loss of sleep - backup and recovery. The first chapter starts with some clever scripting to show the size of a database before proceeding onto a simple backup with mysqldump.

The second chapter covers backup options and starts by covering backup strategies. Do you need a static backup performed during a window of time where no other access to the database is needed? Or does your database require 7/24/365 availability where a hot backup is needed? Can you use binary logs for a point in time recovery? These options as well as the various relevant command line switches are covered.

The third chapter covers disaster recovery. The author starts with the often overlooked steps of determining requirements and determining responsibility. This chapter involves a case study and some examples of problems that could bite any DBA. The forth chapter covers replication and the fifty recovery. The sixth chapter details server options to aid in backup and recovery.
The heart of the book is the disaster scenarios in chapter seven. Like a true crime story collection, this chapter details some notorious outages and how to avoid them.

The book finishes with database management for MySQL instances in the cloud. Yes, data in the cloud still needs to be backed up for recovery.

This volume needs to be on the desk of any MySQL DBA. It will quickly get dog-eared and probably sprout notes on Post-it notes. This book covers all the available tools for DBAs in a straight ahead way and tells you how to use them like only a battle scared DBA can mentor can.

The latest in parasitology

Mark Wiser's text "Protozoa and Human Disease" is a well crafted and easy to read introduction to infectious protozooa. Dr. Wiser covers all of the classical parasitological topics in a high-yield format and expertly connects the basic sciences with clinical and public health interventions. In addition (and more importantly), he has fully integrated the latest modern parasitological topics into this traditional framework. The text includes sections on molecular epidemiology, parasite genetics, and immunoparasitology. Each chapter follows the same basic layout (akin to the WHO Control of Communicable Diseases Manual) organized along a taxonomic scheme. The book is a bit pricey for a trichrome paperback (black and white with blue). But, to its credit, it sets a new standard.

"Protozoa and Human Disease" represents the latest text from the faculty of tropical medicine at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. The school has a venerable history of crafting the some of the finest texts on parasitology beginning in the 1930's with Faust's Human Helminthology. If one was interested in the traditional paring of a textbook with an atlas then I would fully recommend the indispensable Atlas of Human Parasitology.

This series of books, to me, is still the 'gold standard" for Bible commentaries. One can skim or go as deeply into facts and theories about the Scriptures as one chooses. The only thing that could be better is to have the series as originally written rather than the edited and re-written one such as this.

Wow! What a compelling story!

This is a very interesting and well written, fascinating account of an incredible (not yet finished) life journey. We had the honor of having two of our daughters taught by Astrig. And while we were always impressed, we had no idea about this incredible story of her life. We are all blessed to have her in our lives. What a formidable woman!

Beautiful Faith Filled Life Story

A fascinating life journey of faith. Astrig lovingly gives praise and thanks to God for every aspect of her life...from guiding her courageous move to a foreign country as a teenager, to her musical education and career, to meeting the love of her life. This book is an inspiration from cover to cover and a must read for anyone who is seeking to find or questioning their purpose in life.

A Life's Journey and a Walk of Faith

An amazing story about a woman of faith's life journey. Astrig's story is told with a clarity of style that allows the reader to participate in her journey. Both my husband and I read her story and enjoyed every page. But the best part for us was when she met Ed and they began their life's journey together. Ed is a life-long friend of my husband and was best man at our wedding. We met Astrig not too long after they were married and knew at once that this was a couple who were meant for each other. We never knew all of the trials that Astrig had encountered before her marriage to Ed so reading this book brought new depth to this lovely woman we call friend. Her faith through is so strong and it shines through on every page. An inspiring story that all can enjoy.
