I do not have the background to be able to read all the Latin, Greek, Spanish, French, etc. wording in the text. I gradually figured out enough of it to pick up my rate of reading.

The previous reviewer sounds like he/she is critical of the Catholic Church to begin with, taking potshots at a controversy about whether doctrine changes in the Church. I think the author's point of view is that, due the the size of Augustine's intellectual output, some 4.5 million words, there has been considerable misunderstanding and misquoting of Augustine. To rectify this situation, to our benefit, the author reviews all the citations in Augustine's work about the concept of deification.

Meconi's thesis is that deification is a metaphor for the Christian life. He discusses how deification fits in with the standard teaching of the church. Meconi is not advocating Mormonism, quite the contrary. Deification rests on the notion that man was created in the image and likeness of God; the "likeness" was lost due to the sin of Adam and Eve; through Jesus Christ's incarnation mankind has the opportunity to be restored to that status of godliness that it possessed originally.

Salvation in Christ does not change human nature into divine nature. But, salvation restores the unity between humanity and God. (Of course, not all humanity is looking for such restoration.) The most precious thing to God is His likeness, and His plan of salvation is to enable mankind to regain that likeness. This restoration occurs as a result of the incarnation of Christ, the baptism and Holy Communion in each believer, and the maintenance of oneself in a Christian life.

Augustine is a major theologian in the Church and this book is a high quality analysis of this topic.

Setting the record straight on Augstine

Simply put, Meconi is out to set the record straight on Augustine’s teaching on deification, arguing that “deification of the human person is central to how St. Augustine presents a Christian’s new life in Christ. Augustine accordingly presents the Christian life in terms of the Son of God’s becoming human so humans can become God.”[2] In fact, those are the opening lines of the book. And while this whole topic may sound scary, scandalous, or sacrilegious to many in the Western Protestant tradition, there’s nothing to be alarmed of. Christian teachers in all major branches of Christianity have affirmed this staggering truth, including Irenaeus, Athanasius, Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Charles Wesley, and even C. S. Lewis. To disregard or discredit this teaching is to rob Christianity of part of its richest heritage and to obscure the depths of what God’s salvation accomplishes in man.

Meconi however focuses exclusively on Augustine’s contribution here, and he proves to be an excellent guide and interpreter for navigating Augustine’s massive corpus. Meconi’s presentation of Augustine’s view of “creation as the unifying prologue to divine union” and his view of the serpent’s temptation of the first couple with ‘being like God’ as a false path to deification and the only thing that could sufficiently tempt sinless humans in God’s image, were particularly illuminating.

This book not only proved a point, it deepened my appreciation for the central truths of the Christian faith—the purpose of God, the person and work of Christ, the operation of the Holy Spirit, the salvation of the believers, and the function of the church. If you want a patristic study on deification through the eyes of one of the preeminent doctors, grab this and buckle up.

He received his Ph.D. in 1960 at Courant Institutes of Mathematics and Sciences of New York University. He is one of Schaum's most prolific authors. In particular, he has written, among others, Beginning Linear Algebra, Probability, Discrete Mathematics, Set Theory, Finite Mathematics, and General Topology.

The late Murray R. Spiegel received the M.S. degree in Physics and the Ph.D. in Mathematics from Cornell University. He had positions at Harvard University, Columbia University, Oak Ridge, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and served as a mathematical consultant at several large companies. He was the author of numerous journal articles and 14 books on various topics in mathematics.

I bought the original version of this book written by Murray Spiegel and John Liu. I have kept it for reference and find it adequate for some specific mathematics. A book worth buying if you need to learn some basic theories of mathematics.

My daughter LOVES the colors!

I wish I knew why this book is so hard to find. All Eric Carle books are great, especially this one! No words in this book, just his beautiful pictures -- a song in paint!

When my daughter was only a couple of months old, she was interested in everything, but this book really held her attention. Get a hardback copy if you can find one -- paper just won't hold up to a baby's abuse.

Utility Gem

This book is a utility gem that combines the language of astrology with that of archangels. I was attracted to this book for basically one reason: I am an apprentice of astrology and was curious of how both archetypal energies can work harmoniously together.
To be honest I am not an angel person, maybe because of some Christian heritage I am not comfortable with, however I found this book freshly non-denominational.
This book helped me link the twelve zodiac signs, which I was already familiar with, to the twelve archangels. To me this felt like a rosetta stone energy book that explained to me bit by bit how the music of the spheres can be related to the archangel modalities.
As you can imagine the book is divided in chapters that link a zodiac sign to an archangel. In each chapter both the zodiac sign and the archangel are explained in simple, easy going layman language, illustrating the reason why that pair was combined and how they elegantly work together.
The chapter is then further divided astrologically and archangel wise by Sun sign (our vital energy, our life purpose), the Ascendant (how we present ourselves to the world and see the world), Mercury (how we think, talk and communicate), Venus (what we love, cherish and give value to) and Mars (our passion, assertiveness and sexuality).
In each of these divisions by planets, the archangel concerned is further detailed and its modus operandi explored, each time blending in how we can call upon for his/her help to better use the gifts we have in our natal charts.
In between each chapter there is a general presentation of the archangel, what energy he/she represents, what activities are normally linked with this archangel and the situations that we can call upon for his/her assistance.
I was particularly mesmerised by the use of colours and designs especially by the oniric illustrations of each zodiac sign. Sadly equivalent archangel drawings were not present.

I am sure my astrology studies have been enriched with this book. I will from this day on, curiously link the sign and planets with the archangel concerned and I am certain that a healing journey with the angelic realms through the astrology filter has been initiated somewhere in my heart.

I started reading Angel Astrology 101: Discover the Angels Connected with Your Birth Chart by co-authors, Doreen Virtue and Yasmin Boland the moment I received it from Hay House Publishing for review. As a fan of astrology, I was curious to see how the authors connected the angels with each of the signs in the zodiac.

The "101" in the title suggests that the book is giving readers a light introduction into the background of astrology and the angelic realm. I would have to agree. A small amount of information is provided about our ancestors and their discovery and tracking of the planets. A quick mention of the Christian church and its ties to astrology is included, along with a few biblical references.

Each of the 12 chapters in the book is devoted to a particular astrological sign and includes: the corresponding archangel (based on the traits of a particular sign), and the meanings of the Sun, the Ascendant (rising) sign, the Moon, Mars, Venus and Mercury in that sign.

Some of the angel/astrological match-ups were pretty close, while others seemed to be a catchall for every symptom or issue one could think of...never mind a person's planetary makeup.

Overall the book was positive and fairly entertaining. I would recommend it to those who are somewhat new to astrology and/or angels. For the ones well-versed in the study of both subjects, there probably won't be anything new or remarkable to be had within the pages of Angel Astrology 101: Discover the Angels Connected with Your Birth Chart; but it's still a fun read.

I always thought I was being cute or clever when I'd tell people that I'm a Leo with Virgo tendencies; this being because my birthday, August 21st is so very close to the cusp, which sometimes ranges from the 21st thru the 24th depending on what resource you're using. But now not only reading, but INGESTING my next Doreen Virtue title from Hay House, “Angel Astrology 101, Discover the Angels Connected with your Birth Chart” co-authored with Yasmin Boland, a writer who has dedicated her professional life to astrology, I have become enlightened to the fact, that I truly am a Leo with Virgo tendencies, that has nothing to do with the cusp. These ladies also break it down in detail about our Archangels, large protective angels that have specific traits, in accordance with not only our popular Sun sign, but also with other planets that have everything to do with the way we problem solve, stay calm, express our emotions, and have healthy relationships amongst other life experiences and personal feelings. (Hence my Leo with Virgo tendencies...). The authors explain that basically the way the planets were aligned during our miraculous entry from the cosmos to earth, is pretty much aligned with who we are today, right now.
I found out my natal chart, (a birth chart from an astrologer that includes your name, location and time of birth along with exact planet placement) a few years back when I was curious to learn more about my astrological compatibility with my boyfriend (I don't know any girl that hasn't done this, lol). Of course I was thrilled when the stars had us as aligned as our hearts (the cosmos synchronized with feelings = a good thing). I ended up keeping my chart accessible on my desktop though, as I wanted to learn more about ME. Well, some of it resonated at the moment, and after reading this book, I can honestly say ALL OF IT DOES.
A friend reminded me, our Sun sign, also referenced to as our Star sign, is our personality. But if we look at the details of our personality, the nooks and crannies, that's where this book steps in and the authors show us what's up. The book begins with a brief history on astrology and angels and also includes gorgeous and whimsical artwork with a nice spot to take notes in the back if needed. The size of the book too is perfect- compact enough to throw in your purse or backpack and use as a convenient reference. Obviously I found the chapter on Leo with Archangel Raziel immediately upon receiving, read it first and of course nodded my head to it all. I am such a Leo, I got that. But what was even cooler for me was learning more about Archangel Raziel, and his penchant for healing karmic relationships, letting go of negative patterns, and his ability to help manifest your dream career, among a wealth of other specialties. This goes for 12 different Archangels, depending on your sign and they are detailed in a way that you easily relate to your personal life. Now, after you find out your chart is when you can start looking at and learning more about THE OTHER SIGNS you actually are! Seriously, finding out my Mercury (planet related to all forms of communication: writing, speaking , even thinking) AND Venus (planet determining how you love) were BOTH in Virgo when I was born is a trip. Doreen says, “...no matter what your actual Star sign is, if you have Mercury in Virgo, you basically think like a Virgo.” And yes of course there are a list of positives that correlate nicely with this discovery, but what I love about these ladies too is their gentle reminder when pointing out any negatives that relate to us as well:

“...each sign has its strengths and its shadow side. Your strengths are to be used to help others, and your shadow side is something for you to work on healing.” We are all flawed, yet strong and unique, together.

I've learned that Virgo's Archangel is Metatron and that when I'm feeling emotionally challenged, perhaps via a miscommunication with a loved one, I can call upon Metatron for support. It obviously helps to already believe in your angels, all of them. The authors also provide the detailed info as well for your Moon; planet representing emotions (Aquarius), Mars; planet determining feelings based on anger & intimacy (Gemini) and Rising or Ascendant sign; our true nature (Sagittarius, makes sense). I honestly can't get enough of this book. So, after completely ingesting everything I could about myself, “Leo is also the sign that doesn't ever dwell upon the past. The Sun never goes retrograde...” (awesome) I can honestly say I am thoroughly interested in understanding as much as possible about my chart and of course my boyfriend's. I want to learn more, it's all fascinating and humbling at the same time. Essentially, Angel Astrology 101 has been created to open your eyes to why you do the things you do and feel the way you feel. Get your natal chart, make some tea and ingest it all. Because as the authors state, "the more you understand your chart, the more you understand yourself."

Just another Warhammer Novel

This is another installment of the Warhammer universe, well written, a nice pace to the story.
Characters are well thought out, full in presentation, and we can like them for what they are, from the new volunteer ( Lanz ), to his 3 Musketeer like companions, older and somewhat wiser veterans of battle.

This book is better than some I have read of the setting, however I find only more of the same.

Just a good book to kill time with, nothing more, noting less.

The book just kinda leaves you wanting to know where these people end up after it all, but cant answer that question as the "war" goes on, but in the world of Warhammer what else can you expect ?

Lots of funny banter and exciting battle scenes

"Call To Arms" is yet another good read from the Empire Army Series. Third entry in the series, it differs from its two predecessors in that, whereas "Reiksguard" and "Iron Company" focused on the roles, respectively, of elite knights and gunnery engineers in the Imperial Army, this novel gives the spotlight to the Scarlets, a well-regarded infantry regiment.

The novel, which can be read as a standalone, has three parts. Part One introduces us to young Dieter Lanz, a new recruit to the Scarlets and foster son of a retired Scarlet who is now a miller. Taught how to fight with a sword since he can walk, Dieter gets to see battle right away, for non-human enemies -- beastmen, goblins, and orcs -- of the empire, newly united by a cunning orc chieftain named Ironfang have invaded a province, and the army in that province has mobilized quickly to fight the enemies.

Within a short time, Dieter gets to show his mettle and bravery, which win him the respect and friendship of Sgt. Bohlen, Rieger, Gerhardt, and Holst. These four men are older than Dieter and protect his back when he gets into trouble with two shady Scarlets.

Unfortunately for the Scarlets, their commanding general makes a fatal mistake. Thousands of the empire army are killed. The remaining men have to flee from the enemies.

Part Two opens with the Count responsible for defending the imperiled province welcoming the Emperor's personal emissary. A decision is made that a general who has previously been forced to retire should be called back to duty. We learn that Dieter, his comrades, and the two shady Scarlets are alive, but even as they continue to fight the enemies, and Dieter gets to put his experience working at a mill to good use in fighting a feared monster troll, Dieter also grows increasingly afraid of getting ambushed by the two shady Scarlets.

Part Three is when the newly recalled general makes his move. Commanding an army that is much, much smaller than the enemy's, the general can only win by outmaneuvering Ironfang. Will he succeed?

Of the first three books in the series that I've read, this one, in my opinion, has the best mix of good dialog (lots of funny banter!), character development (Dieter grows up quickly after getting thrown into battle immediately after becoming a Scarlet), and exciting battle scenes (the wolf riders and trolls are fearsome!). It's still not great literature, but it's a really fun and satisfying read!

A light read.

I have not read any of the Empire Army series nor have I played Warhammer. This was a curiosity read and it wasn't bad. It's quick and if I could describe it I would say the book feels like a board game rather then a story.

I wondered if this was a continuation of the series but it has enough to be it's own story.

The story line centers on young Dieter Lanz who seeks to be a recruit of the sword infantry known as the "The Scarlets" His retired foster father Helmut Schau, a respected warrior of the unit, trained him in the ways of soldiering since he was a child. Over time Dieter developed a child's admiration of Scarlets. His fantasy starts to change when he meets Holst who is a member of the Scarlets. Holst is nothing like his imagination of a grand soldier of the Scarlets. They bribe a ride on a support wagon and head off toward the regiment which was called out to deal with a large raiding force of greenskins(Orcs and Goblins).

The idealistic Dieter quickly learns about the realities of war especially when he witnesses the defeat of the army poorly led by a political general rather then a combat general. His dreams of heroics are replaced by flight and fight as the Greenskins hunt the survivors.

I liked the characters and did find the banter between them funny at times. The ending was predictable and the story felt like it ended before it was finished. I will admit I wanted more. Dieter learned the battle was won but the war goes on. However, this is probably it for Dieter and the Scarlets.
