Caribbean Rum presents the fascinating cultural, economic, and ethnographic history of rum in the Caribbean from the colonial period to the present.
Drawing on data from historical archaeology and the economic history of the Caribbean, Frederick Smith explains why this industry arose in the islands, how attitudes toward alcohol consumption have impacted the people of the region, and how rum production evolved over 400 years from a small colonial activity to a multi-billion-dollar industry controlled by multinational corporations. He investigates the economic impact of Caribbean rum on many scales, including rum's contribution to sugarcane plantation revenues, its role in bolstering colonial and postcolonial economies, and its impact on Atlantic trade. Smith discusses the political and economic trends that determined the value of rum, especially war, competition from other alcohol industries, slavery and emancipation, temperance movements, and globalization.            
The book also examines the social and sacred uses of rum and identifies the forces that shaped alcohol use in the Caribbean. It shows how levels of drinking and drunken deportment reflected underlying social tensions, which were driven by the coercive exploitation of labor and set within a highly contentious hierarchy based on class, race, gender, religion, and ethnic identity, and how these tensions were magnified by epidemic disease, poor living conditions, natural disasters, international conflicts, and unstable food supplies.

While apparently earning superprofits betting on "derivatives," futures contracts pegged to fluctuations of Japan's stock exchange, he was actually, according to Rawnsley, racking up huge losses and concealing his unauthorized trading activities in a mislabeled account. By the time top management discovered his reckless bets, his losses had reached #827 million. Leeson, now in a German prison pending extradition to Singapore, was the catalyst for a disaster waiting to happen, declares Rawnsley, a Hong Kong-based journalist and former research analyst for Barings Securities (Japan) Ltd. She blames Barings's downfall on lax management, incompetence and inadequate oversight, all of which caused bank managers to ignore numerous warning signals regarding Leeson's speculation. For over 200 years Barings Bank was one of the leading financial institutions in England. In 1803 it was instrumental in financing the Louisiana Purchase, and during the 19th century its financial clout was felt throughout the British Empire. But early in 1995 this preeminent London-based firm was brought down by one man: Nicholas Leeson. How and why it happened is chronicled by Rawnsley, herself a former employee of Barings. Leeson, depicted as overly ambitious, emerged from the back office and was posted to Singapore, where he quickly became involved in trading. According to Rawnsley, Leeson "lived for the limelight of the trading floor." Leeson was so good at winning that he quickly became a star trader. But he made mistakes and tried covering them up, continuing to lose even more money. It was just a matter of time before it all came crashing down. Leeson was the catalyst for the debacle, but Rawnsley also points a finger at Barings management for a faulty risk management system and for fostering an environment where "rogue traders" were allowed to wreak havoc. No one but an insider, or at least someone who had been employed at a managerial level, could comprehend how a 28-year-old trader bankrupted a venerated British financial institution. Rawnsley, a former Far East financial correspondent and one-time employee of Barings, brings a unique perspective to her task of unraveling the whodunit. After tracing the history of the bank, updating us on the 1980s and 1990s cast of characters, and probing the psychological mind-sets of traders (Nick Leeson, in particular), the blame, she concludes, lay with no one specifically and everyone in general. Although not necessarily a Jekyll-Hyde personality, Leeson was almost encouraged to commit fraudulent activities as both a trader and the backroom settlement manager, a conflict of interest and an egregious error. So, too, was management's ignoring of a warning by external auditors, the Bank of England's lack of financial regulatory clout, and so on. Only Leeson's trial will uncover more of the actual details. An Enjoyable Read

Unlike the previous reviewer, I found the book to be a captivating and educational read! The plot held my attention throughout the book, even through the technical descriptions of how investment futures work. I felt that the book was a balanced blend of story and analysis. If you want more than a superficial account of the Barings debacle, this is a good book for you.
It is true that this author focuses as much on the role of management in the fall of Barings as on Nick Leeson's role in it, which is fine. It is an opinion that she substantiates somewhat persuasively throughout the book. The reader gets the sense that Nick was just an opportunist who took advantage of a glaring management weakness at Barings. (The author will not be able to persuade you, however, that Nick is just a good guy who slipped. He's scum. I think the author was too lenient with him.) But through her account of Baring Bank's mismanagement of its Futures division, the author provides a very useful lesson for senior management out there.

This is an account which does not delve enough into the psychology of Nick Leeson personally (as opposed to traders generally) to be interesting, and is too apologetic for the management debacle that was Barings. Skip it. Nick's disingenous account is better. Lefevre's story of about stock operators is better still

The Creativity Challenge - A Must Read

As an artist, I often find myself getting stuck; the creativity tends to flow less from time to time and this book is exactly what helps me dig deeper and find new ways to muster it up, sparking inspiration and new concept ideas for my next piece of art. I've been able to take some key challenges and apply it toward my artistry and overall day-to-day life without even thinking about it; while other days I flip to a random page and complete whatever challenge I land on. I highly recommend it for anyone who needs to be challenged to find their inner creativity, as it has most definitely helped me with mine.

MUST for educators of all ages!

What a great idea for a book! I always like to think of myself as innovative and creative, but the ideas in "The Creativity Challenge" take it to another level. I teach elementary school and cannot wait to use the different ideas in this book with my students this coming school year.

I plan on doing at least one challenge a week with my students. I really like how the different ideas are coded under five different idea types. Genius!

All people, regardless of age, should push the limits of their own creativity and as an individual, mother, and teacher this book provides a perfect springboard for just that!

Brilliant! This book 'sniffs out' the cobwebs preventing the human mind's abilities to think, to do, to become, and to share the original and the articulate genius within all of us. This is more than just another book on creativity. This is a reservoir of what and of how to find and utilize our creative instincts.

Kathy Griffin, a multi-Emmy Award-winning and Grammy-winning comedian and actress, is best known for her Bravo television reality show Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, her multiple stand-up comedy specials on HBO, Comedy Central, and Bravo, and her four-year stint on the NBC sitcom Suddenly Susan. I'm a huge fan of Kathy's. I think her stand-up is hilarious. She has some priceless bits, like her recollection of Brooke Shield's wedding. I stayed up all night reading this book.

Some of her revelations are entertaining and juicy, like how Tupac couldn't read, and John Hamm is a drunken lout. The biggest thing I didn't like is her celebrity worship. She gushes like a crazed fan about certain celebs as if she doesn't realize she's "one of them." She's surprised when a celeb recognizes her, but they'd have to be living under a rock to not know who she is. She's been on TV for decades, and she's known for skewering celebs. They all have to be aware of her, out of fear, if nothing else.

JUICY, FUNNY AND ENTERTAINING!

Kathy Griffin's Celebrity Run-Ins: My A-Z Index by Kathy Griffin is a fun read which many readers will enjoy. The book is about the “run-ins” that the comedian, actress, author and Grammy winner experienced first-hand, and you can safely vouch for its veracity. As the book’s title suggests, it is indexed painstakingly and methodically, and you have the option to pick and choose and select the entries in the book. Else, like reading any other normal book, you can start from the beginning and read it through to the end.

If you love or hate Kathy Griffin either as a person or entertainer or even writer, you’ll surely love this book which deals mostly with the relationships she had with other celebrities. Or if it can’t be called a relationship, at least it is her views about others, which may be a much more appropriate description. In the book, she talks about a lot of people ranging from Warren Beatty to Woody Allen to Barbra Streisand to Demi Lovato to Leonardo DiCaprio to Donald Trump, and to Ellen DeGeneres just to name a few. If you enjoy Hollywood gossip with an inside source, look no further, Kathy Griffin's Celebrity Run-Ins: My A-Z Index by Kathy Griffin is your best source.
