If you are interested in a precise and clearly written guide to learning or deepening your understanding of the craft of writing this is the book for you. It is an accessible and complete how to guide for a novice or an expert. Her book is full of anecdotes and excercises to help any writer solve any problem encountered in writing at any level. Take her book's lessons to heart, and you'll hear her clear voice, focused and compassionate asking questions, which if answered with disciplined intention lead to the appropriate answer. Moore's tone is supportive and respectful throughout this remarkable read. It's a sure footed guide through the wilderness of learning how to write well. Without this book I wouldn't have been able to write the rough draft of the novel that sits in my lap.

"I never considered myself to be a musician when I was growing up. In fact, I was thoroughly convinced I did not have what it takes to be able to play music.

I took cello lessons and failed miserable. I took piano lessons without making much progress. I sort of learned to play the recorder in school, if you can call playing hot cross buns playing.

What I’m getting at is that I was a terrible musician. I couldn’t sing, I couldn’t keep time, I couldn’t play an instrument, the list of things I couldn’t do with respect to music is long.

I found this particularly frustrating because my father is an absolutely fantastic professional saxophone player. I figured somewhere in me there had to be an inherent talent for music.

I was very wrong.

What I realized as I grew older was that my father didn’t have an inherent musical talent either. What he did have was an unstoppable drive to succeed.

It took me a few years to get over my false idea that I could never be a good musician.

A few years earlier my father had bought me a guitar as a Christmas present. It was sitting in a dusty case in my room, neglected.

I had recently met a man named Jacob, another amazing musician. Jacob’s talent was with string instruments, particularly the bass. I asked his advice about what I should learn first.

He told me to learn music theory, so I went online and began to read. I read a lot and started to teach myself scales. I was still really terrible at the guitar, but I kept at it, and slowly I improved.

I stress the word slowly.

A couple weeks into this process I asked Jacob to teach me guitar, and he said he would. I quickly found out that Jacob–despite being a wonderful player–is a horrible teacher.

Jacob cannot think like a beginner, he cannot break down the knowledge and present it in bite sized pieces that are easy to swallow and digest.

I wrote this book with that in mind.

During the process of teaching myself the guitar, I learned a lot about how to teach guitar. I applied what I learned to write my best-selling guitar series: Scott's Simple Guitar Lessons.

I’m still learning today. Music is extremely complicated and eclectic. I know for a fact that I will never master music, but that was never my goal.

My goal was to be able to play with other people and enjoy doing it.

I've achieved that goal, and it was worth the work.

Now I want to help you achieve your musical goals, no matter what they are.

I want to use what I learned the slow, hard way to make your learning process fast and easy.

Just bought this bc amazon recommended it (I'm a sucker for impulse buys!). Glad I did, it explains the concept of the circle of fifths in a guitar friendly way and with patient, descriptive language. I'm always learning about guitar, and teach a bit too. This is a tool for both.

Learn something new......... teach yourself (sort of)

I'm pretty much self taught and I've been trying to learn what the Circle of Fifths is all about for some time now. I wish this book was available long before now. Finally.......a book that discribes with examples and diagrams that makes it much more understandable to me. I've since bought several more titles in this series, and have exchanged several e-mails with these books author, Scott Harris. He actually sits down and answers my questions in greater detail than I ever expected from anyone. I'd recommend this series to any beginner or anyone having problems with the specific subjects these books address. I hope to see future subjects as I am always interested in learning something new.

About the Author
Joan R. Kaplowitz retired from her librarian position at UCLA in 2007. She remains active in the profession through her publications, her professional development workshops for librarians, and by continuing to teach the graduate information literacy instruction course in the Information Studies department at UCLA. Dr. Kaplowitz was also a member of the faculty development team for the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Institute for Information Literacy’s Immersion Program, and taught in six of the programs between 1999 and 2004. Her many publications include Transforming Information Literacy Instruction Using Learner-Centered Teaching, the award-winning Information Literacy Instruction: Theory and Practice, (co-authored with Esther Grassian), and the “Information Literacy Instruction” section the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science (also co-authored with Ms. Grassian).

A good read but who is Manuel Robbins?

I want to open by saying I'm not a scholar of the Bronze Age, rather a student of history in different eras who's expanded his interest into the Bronze Age. I'm hoping that my review conveys the assessment of a student rather than a scholar.
I want to open by saying this book has bounced between 2 and 4 stars for me in reading it. My biggest draw in calling this a 2 star book is Mr (Dr?, Professor?) Robbins spends a lot of time presenting Hittite (in particular) and other people with limited maps or timelines throughout this book. While not critical it is when reading about ancient times and understanding which leader of an empire is impacting another leader. While Mr. Robbins and other scholars may keep their timeline straight and know the locations and people associated with them, other readers don't always have that advantage and as I've said in numerous other reviews of history books, provide the reader more visual information (maps and in this case time lines). I say this because in reading through this book I've spent a small amount of time querying the internet on different leaders and people (I'm no expert now but do feel more confident that I was entering)/
On the plus side I truly have to commend Mr. Robbins on his presentation of material; it's very persuasive and presented in a logical way. When presenting the case for each of the people, Mr. Robbins does a great job giving us the situation and the supporting evidence (that he's presenting) and providing a logical path for the reader to follow. Something I also observed was that the more I read of the book, the easier it was to understand Mr. Robbins and what he was writing about.
A relative neutral piece (to me) was who is Manuel Robbins? We're not provided with a biography or credentials of any sort. Instead we're given an individual who's presenting their case for the Collapse of the Bronze Age which is refreshing since they're not belittling readers with a degree. Instead we have Manuel telling us a story as they see and understand it and what they believe happens; this is something fairly pure in this society anymore where people are prone to using degrees to make their point. What we can determine from their work is that Manuel Robbins has studied about the Hittite Empire and has a lot of knowledge of the other empires that "touched" the Hittites, particularly as the Hittite Empire (and the Bronze Age) collapsed.
The bottom line: nicely done, possibly a little dry but with good thought; worth my time.

A solid survey of the Eastern Mediterranean world at the End of the Bronze Age

Robbins' "Collapse of the Bronze Age" is a thorough, solidly written survey of the history of the Eastern Mediterranean in about the 12th and 11th centuries BCE, stretching from Mycenaean Greece to Egypt. Robbins presents contending theories about what happened to cause the destruction of so many Greek cities, caused the Hittite Empire to collapse, and nearly ended the ancient realm of Egypt. Unlike some writers, Robbins shuns sensationalist interpretations, frequently warning the reader to judge archaeological evidence cautiously, citing numerous examples where a superficial interpretation of archaeological finds is contradicted by reliable historical sources.

Robbins does not supply final answers to many of the questions asked, but he does provide a good framework for the intelligent reader to continue to explore those questions and seek answers for him- or herself.

A Remarkable Synthesis

This book doen not have an author's profile as such, but has the flavor of the "informed amateur" in the best sense -- a non-professional who immerses himself in a number of different specialties and then integrates them in a way that a specialist in any one of them can't. In this case, the subject is the interactions among the various peoples of the eastern Mediterranean at the end of the Late Bronze Age, ending in a collapse of civilization as great as that of Europe at the end of the Roman Empire. Pulling this together involved mastering subjects whose specialists usually don't communicate with each other much -- Egyptologists, Near Eastern archaeologists, Levantine archaeologists, Aegean archaeologists, and Old Testament scholars. Robbins does this easily and in a very readable, even exciting style. He has also produced what I as an archaeologist feel is a great contribution to our understanding of the ancient world.

Fabulous--beautiful and useful

I received this book as a belated (since it came out shortly after Christmas) holiday gift and I'm slowly and blissfully making my way through it. I've been making books more or less on my own for a number of years and have read lots and lots of books on making handmade books, so I was a little worried that this one would be somewhat redundant.

Happily, I was so wrong. I'm paging through it slowly, but I've done enough peeking ahead to see that there are dozens of gorgeous book forms here that I've never explored. In fact, just reading the first chapter taught me a number of useful new things about tools and techniques. Throughout the book, instructions are clear and include lots of practical tips for executing them, and the illustrations of finished books by Golden herself and by other artists are inspiring without being too intimidating. Golden's book is getting a permanent place on my art book shelf, and I can't wait to wade all the way in and start trying some new bindings.

Pretty, but not very helpful.

I had hoped to learn how to make handmade books when I purchased this, but the author seems to have focused on adding a large number of TYPES of books to the repertoire while not really spending enough effort to describe any of them in detail. It's great (I guess) that there are 100 types of bindings, but the descriptions and diagrams for even the most simple ones are quite difficult to follow. She wastes a lot of type talking about her friends and who invented what, but when I try to follow the instructions I find them sketchy and poorly diagrammed. A ten-step process may have only one or two diagrams. Ten would be better.

Often the author assumes knowledge that I don't have. For instance, she has a whole page devoted to making endbands, but she never explains what an endband IS. She also does not show a diagram of one in use. I suppose I could go to the web and get a lesson on that, but then why do I need the book?

This might be a great text for a class taught by the author. As a stand-alone teaching aid it lacks substance.

I found the book "Cover to Cover" by Shareen LaPlatz to be more useful. It is a smaller book with many fewer binding types, but each one is explained in clear detail with adequate drawings for each project.

Buyer Beware

Let me say at the outset that I am a fan of Alisa Golden and I eagerly await all her books. As said fan, I own all her titles and I was very interested in this book. I was very disappointed to find out that it is a compilation of her two previous books, Creating Handmade Books and Unique Handmade Books. Nothing new here. It is, however, a good value. It is a good book but don't bother if you already have the others because this is nothing but a retread.

An invaluable resource not only for anyone wanting a kick-start to publishing travel articles and/or to publishing and selling photos but also for anyone who already has had some success in these areas. Essential information and advice on and easy access to links for further information on various publications presented in a very concise, user-friendly way. Well-researched, with personal contact having been made with publications obvious. Being able to write and photograph are one type of challenge. Finding out how to get published and make money with your creations is quite another and often the more difficult challenge. There are many specific guidelines about individual publications with much more information about what is appropriate to submit to each of them than you will find in the Magazine Markets or Writer's Handbooks.
Thare are also personal stories of success about how previously unpublished authors have landed their first acceptance. It includes advice from editors about the importance of being familiar with any publication one is submitting to and following the editors guidelines precisely. This book should help many to break into the field and so many alternative publications are listed by name there should be room for all.
