This book is much, much more than a simple accounting on tragedy. It is rich in historical context and develops the setting and background for the deaths chronicled. It provides valuable lessons to be learned and to be re-learned and reinforced. Through the investigative reports, it puts you into the minds of some of the people involved and even into the minds of the victims. About the Author
Michael Ghiglieri earned a Ph.D. in Ecology from U.C. Davis for research on wild chimps in Uganda. He has worked as a wilderness river and trekking guide in the Sierra Nevada and many other regions and countries since 1974, rowing 141 trips down Grand Canyon. His book Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon is still Northern Arizona's regional best selling book. Charles R. "Butch" Farabee earned his M.S. from the FBI Academy and during 34 years with the National Park Service (10 in Yosemite) rose from protection ranger to superintendent. He has responded to 1,000+ Search & Rescue missions and has managed these departments in Yosemite and Grand Canyon. His books Death, Daring and Disaster: Search and Rescue in the National Parks and Ranger: An American Icon are sold in nearly every National Park in America.

Incredible Book!

Granted this book has some gory details, but what makes this such a great read is that it's 600+ pages of what NOT to do in Yosemite. It describes literally hundreds of real-life cases of tragic errors in judgement, or just plain accidents. It also details the biggest dangers of the park and how to avoid them. Another thing I appreciated about the book is that it clearly demonstrates this is NOT the place to visit with careless abandon. It is incredibly sad that so many people lost their lives in this beautiful place, but I'm sure this book has SAVED hundreds more with their very-well documented case studies.

Fantastic

I love all things Yosemite...I bought this book the week or two after those three kids plunged over Vernal Fall. And per this book, they weren't the first.
To sum it up, if you are a drunk young man, you are pretty well represented in the death column. Most of the people were ill-prepared, had no respect for wilderness, or rock climbers with various mishaps.
I would not like to fall 3,000 feet into rocks because of a missed caribiner. I decided that after reading this book.
Just a well-written book. Keeps your interest, I think I read the whole book in just a few days. Highly recommend for people interested in Yosemite.

Should be required reading!

In view of the recent deaths in Yosemite, I believe this book should be required reading, especially for young people. Millions of visitors have wonderful and safe experiences in the park. Yet there are always a select few who do not heed warning signs, and think they are the ones who will defy the odds. This book is about them, the stupid chances they took which cost them their lives. Most of these accidents were preventable.
You will learn a lot from reading this book, not just about Yosemite, but about dealing with nature in general. Rules about safety apply to any National Park or wilderness. Don't risk your own life, the life of your companions, or those who are trying to rescue you. This book will drive that point home for you!
