Masculinities in Theory: An EXCELLENT Introduction

This book is very welcome because it really expands the scope of gender studies for those of us who want to take an approach to gender through the humanities, as opposed to, say, the social sciences or hard sciences. Most other books on masculinity with a broad, interdisciplinary scope tend to be written from a social science angle. This book thus seems to fill a gap in the study of masculinity for folks like me. In 10 chapters covering most disciplines of the humanities, Reeser discusses key concepts of masculinity, and admirably demonstrates the complexity of the term. I especially appreciated the chapter one which lays out some basic theoretical models that are then used in more specific contexts later in the book. When you finish reading the book, you really have a sense of how unstable and complex ideas of masculinity are, and you possess tools to better question your own preconceived ideas on masculinity (and the gender system in a larger sense). The book is written in very clear and comprehensible prose (when there is jargon, it is clearly explained). My sense is that this book will particularly appeal to curious and interested beginning students of masculinity. It will also probably interest instructors who teach gender studies, and any "lay-person" who likes to think. In short, highly recommended.

Todd Reeser does it again in this fine anthology. Highly readable to people of most levels, deep analytical thought and an interesting read especially for an academic text.

I really like this book because it provides the necessary key elements to understand such complex issues that constitute identity and gender. The author provides very clear examples to comprehend theory.
